CHOREOGRAPHY

AN ARCHITECTURE THAT AIMS TO EXPRESS THE MOVEMENTS OF BALLET

Prologue:

My client's name is Jesreth Tah, an extroverted photographer who likes wooden materials and has an interest in ballet.

My Artist is Mikhail Baryshnikov, a Russian - American dancer who is well known as the father of modern ballet.

Design Process:

Since the architecture intends to express the movements of ballet, and my artist is Mikhail. I decided to use one of his dance. La Bayadere. Where he sprints, slowing dance, jump and jumps again but with the framing of his body in mid-air
These movements are then interpreted as a fast pace motion, slow pace motion, jump and lastly a jump with framing.

Three other characteristics of his dance are used as sub drivers for the architecture. Prolongation, as he tries his best to prolong his period in mid-air. Directional, as his dance involves him pointing to the direction he wants to go. 90° angle, he practices and performs dance stances with a 90° angle.

To express the movements of ballet, the use of planes and volumes are played with.

LAND

Presentation Boards:

From the car porch, an opening can be seen. Behind this, an opening visitors will be able to peek at the tree behind it. Gaining their attention and attract them to it. Beginning the journey. When they walk along the corridor they will meet a gentle ramp down. This ramp helps to strengthen the expression of a fast pace motion as it increases their walking speed.

Followed by a 90° turn, forcing the visitors to walk slower. At the turn, a distant tree greets the visitors. As curiosity interests them to move forward to it, they will soon notice a front door. This front door has a step up which allows visitors to perform an upward motion expressing a jump. As the visitors walk through the foyer and to the living room. A staircase awaits them and is accompanied by a skylight that stretched to the second level balcony. This directs and intrigues them to climb up the staircase, achieving the expression of a jump.

At the top of the stair, a window is standing directly in front to frame the view of the outside. To help guide their attention to the frame, timber flooring and skylight are directed to the window. Gaining the expression of a frame. The Skylight helps to illuminate the gallery for better visibility.

Beside it is a studio that allows the client to work in the comforts of his home. The private space of the studio is then converted into a semi-public through the placement of windows which provides visual connectivity to the dining and kitchen space. Allowing both sides to be visually interactive. Suitable to the client's extroverted-ness. The stair in the studio leads to a mezzanine that creates an area of observation over the workspace. A balcony is added to allow the client to get fresh air.

When entering the master bedroom, visitors will have a view of the outside through the fixed glass window that runs along the perimeter of the volume. The masters also has a huge glass opening allowing the client to get the frame of the outside and creates a well-lit condition.
